I dig my Canyon if you're in the small pickup segment. The 4 banger has sufficient power for my needs. You can get a bed extender if you're looking at ladders of over 6 ft. I eek out low/mid 20s around town, and upper 20s/low 30s on the highway. That's empty and with a bed cover. No engine off coasting. Others do much better than me on FE.

Just keep in mind that we're talking about a light-in-the-rear 2wd pickup, so take it easy in the snowy stuff, get some good tires and keep some weight well-secured over the rear axle when needed.
