2005 Ford Escape Hybrid 2wd. I've always loved these cars. Err small SUVs. Averages 30 mpg but I'm sure it can get better with some easy weight reduction and Aero mods. Plus it has enough ground clearance and interior room to keep all the functionality. And they look great IMO.

I dig my Canyon if you're in the small pickup segment. The 4 banger has sufficient power for my needs. You can get a bed extender if you're looking at ladders of over 6 ft. I eek out low/mid 20s around town, and upper 20s/low 30s on the highway. That's empty and with a bed cover. No engine off coasting. Others do much better than me on FE.
Just keep in mind that we're talking about a light-in-the-rear 2wd pickup, so take it easy in the snowy stuff, get some good tires and keep some weight well-secured over the rear axle when needed.

The Ford Escape Hybrid if the inverted converter goes out, that about $6000 to replace and at the end of the day there still batteries in the vehicle and batteries lose charge over time
But I did find this website that has pretty much every single vehicle and engine size there is for that vehicle and even has the mpg each one got, I still cant post website, for some wierd reason, but go to google and type mpgomatic and its all there

Jeep Liberty CRD (Diesel) 2005-2006 or the CRD Grand Cherokee. I have the liberty CRD and it gets 25-30mpg.

I've got a 5'x8' utility trailer. It's bigger, lower and more versatile than any pickup bed and it hurts my mpg not a whit when it's parked behind my house.

I have a boat trailer that i tow my zodiac with on some days my jet ski on other days and what ever else i need to carry on on the trailer.
I made a plywood bed for the trailer that I bolt on with u-bolts to transform my boat trailer to a utility trailer, it also still carries the boats in this form. Like Charlie I am not penalized for it unless its on the hitch. Its seriously the best of both worlds. I seriously recommend getting one. I enjoy mine much more then having to live with a pick up truck..My last vehicle was a 3L Ford ranger that was less useful then my current trailer, for instance try carrying anything half ways long
(pipe, 17 ft lengths of wood, large windows) in your pick up, you'll be screwed and will need to pay for delivery or rent a trailer

This Sunday I'm going to run a load of brush to the burn pile at the dump and on the way back I'm getting a couple yards of dirt. That'll be about 3 miles of less than optimal mpg.

I agree on a hatchback/wagon. How about a Jetta wagon TDI?
