Modern direct injection is already doing most of what is good about diesel injection and a multi air type valve train can get rid of the throttle plate and loss from creating engine vacuum. The only thing different they are trying to do is get rid of the spark plug and run the compression a bit higher. Mazda already has compression ratios cranked up pretty good and likewise for the eco boost type of engines coming out everywhere.
