Modern direct injection is already doing most of what is good about diesel injection and a multi air type valve train can get rid of the throttle plate and loss from creating engine vacuum. The only thing different they are trying to do is get rid of the spark plug and run the compression a bit higher. Mazda already has compression ratios cranked up pretty good and likewise for the eco boost type of engines coming out everywhere.

...since engine "efficiency" is a function of CR, increasing CR is going the right way, however, eliminating spark-ignition is / has been very difficult proposition because of the vastly different burning characteristics & rates of gasoline and diesel fuels. That's *why* HCCI engines commonly employ both SI and DI -- SI (spark-ignition) when the engine is under heavy loads and high engine speeds and DI (diesel-ignition) during light loads and moderate engine speeds.
