i should search for this on here but I always thought octane doesn't effect mpg as long as it doesnt make your engine ping (retard the timing so much it pings).
Just my experiance my Maxima, Altima, and Celica were/ are sensitive to premium where my F150, Suburban, Prism, Towncar were not. I think it depends on the car, the only way to know for sure is to test it.
