Depends. play something low end heavy and feel the door panel. flexing much? the more solid it is, the more low end is being transmitted. flexing even the thickness of your fingernail can have a significant impact on your overall low end efficiency!
With my doors, i mounted them to the metal, such as factory speakers would. then, i used chloroplast and foil duct tape to seal the door. then, i taped a layer of foil bubble insulation. finally, the door panel itself. though, the steel door skin flexes more than i would like... some angled aluminum riveted would help.
