Yeah, it does make me somewhat hesitant to attract more attention to myself. That being said, I'd LOVE to go to the media with the story about how the EPA fined a guy for modifying his 3/4 ton diesel pickup to get better mileage than a Prius! I'm sure that'd go over well with the public.
As far as the fines go, I've searched and searched and was never able to find a case where an individual who modified their own vehicle was fined--even though they technically can. That being said, I think the fine for an individual is like $250. Also, as I understand it, modifying your vehicle in ANY way that negatively affects the emissions, is technically illegal--even something as simple as changing the timing or adding a warm air intake.
