If the petal responce is sloppy then the end of the cable attaching to the injector pump is likely worn or missing parts.
Thats whats wrong with mine.

As far as timing goes when I put my engine together I guessed at the timing, got it 2 degrees advanced and that wasn't enough. Then I bought a timing light adaptor, bumped it up to 4 degrees advanced. Now its at 8 degrees advanced and I think I will leave it there.

It sounds like you have just enough smoke to where installing a J-code intake manifold and getting a better air cleaner could clear it up.

If you have fuel leaks your brick style fuel filter is likely leaking, from the filter block.
Or a bad injector to line connection.
