The truck with an auto and 3.08 (maybe it was 3.02 don't remember) got in the 22-26mpg area before.
The rear is now in the 2.73 - 2.8 range but with a short shift manual.
At this time I don't have rear brakes and have a few severe fuel leaks so the MPGs I have gotten off it going from the repo depot back home and around town don't really mean anything.
Once I have the truck running correctly and on the road full time I can answer, there have been many folks who have done the conversion I did in one form or another and get in the high 20's, I have no doubt I can drive to about 30mpg possibly higher if I am willing to P&G and things of that nature.

If the petal responce is sloppy then the end of the cable attaching to the injector pump is likely worn or missing parts.
Thats whats wrong with mine.
As far as timing goes when I put my engine together I guessed at the timing, got it 2 degrees advanced and that wasn't enough. Then I bought a timing light adaptor, bumped it up to 4 degrees advanced. Now its at 8 degrees advanced and I think I will leave it there.
It sounds like you have just enough smoke to where installing a J-code intake manifold and getting a better air cleaner could clear it up.

If you have fuel leaks your brick style fuel filter is likely leaking, from the filter block.
Or a bad injector to line connection.

Already have a J-code intake on there...
Nah, it will fumigate the neighborhood if I stomp at lower RPMs, I am getting smoke somewhere mid throttle which means its hard for me to determine how much I can give. Basically I get a poof of smoke until the RPMs get up around 2k or so then its smoke free pedal to the metal (if I want).
Leak is around the sending unit where my rear brakes have been spraying.

Oh sending unit leaks are no fun.
If I ever have to pull mine I will likely add an access hatch rather than drop the fuel tank.
If its possible.
What do you have for an intake?
And have you seen the X pipe post over on dieselplace's 6.2L forum?
Normally I give exhaust mods little merret for FE improvements but this one looks like it has potential.
I wish I could have tested it, but now I am part of the turbo club, so all I need to do is install a big 3 to 4 inch straight pipe and keep it as short as possible and minimize the number of bends and turns.

Here is the x pipe link, it doesn't have its own thread, just part of another one.
Question: 6.2L diesel with headers or turbo????? - Page 22 - Diesel Place : Chevrolet and GMC Diesel Truck Forums
You should also try to get ahold of a timing light adaptor tool and checking and setting your timing.
I believe my original 6.2L was advanced to 12 degrees or more. The pump was turned to full advance, but also had a pretty stretchy timing chain.
