I'll bet you could build the lower half of the boat tail off the trunk lid so you can lift it up. The top half would be hinged at the rear of the boat tail and slide forward on the roof when you open the trunk. Attach it to the hood and pillars with strong (electro)magnets maybe? This would hopefully reduce the amount of bodywork you'll have to do on that new car. Duct tape is one thing but holes are forever.
