How about a U-shaped filler panel with 15° tapered ends that fits under a half open hatch? Duplicate the latch mechanism and you'd have an easily removable piece that only touches weatherstripping instead of paint.
I suppose negatives would be an air gap at the top of the hatch, and rear vision.
