A gen 1. Insight can still be driven even with a dead hybrid battery, and it will still return waaaay above average fuel economy. Finding one with a dead battery (5-speed) for a good price is an opportunity to be taken, not avoided.
(You can also sometimes refurbish / rejuvenate the hybrid battery:
