It's actually a cargo compartment,like an independent trunk,which mounts on two struts,one of which is hinged.
When empty,the box will swing up vertically and to one side,allowing the engine lid to be raised.
The upper surface of the trunk is like a massive Herrod Helper,or Ernie's wing sans end-plates.I've never seen one in the U.S..
