I have an article about an add-on cargo box for the Beetle from 1955 which is quite similar to the race setup. It's pretty smart!

I'd love to see that if you have anything to share.

Why not build a fixed fiberglass Kammback mounted to the hatch? See above Photoshop. Starting with a foam buck, shape it, plaster it and bring it to a smooth, painted finish. 'Glass a female mold on it, pull that off and build the final, male piece out of that. Paint. Attach to car. Instant 15% FE gain.
If you're going to mess around with electronics and spoilers you might as well go for the big fish- expend a little more effort and get a lot better results. Do it right and no one will know. Say it's a sun shade.

well, i have zero experience with fiberglass or foam, and I'd like to stay somewhat inconspicuous. that said, if i see things that are really well enough explained, i might give it a shot.

I have the article, from Popular Mechanics. It will be late September at the soonest that I could post it.
I'm behind schedule getting off to Bonneville and will have little time for EcoModder until I return from the trip.

I agree Bonneville is more important. I couldn't talk my son into going to Bonneville this year; but someone he knows is going next year, so maybe then.
I'm picturing something Westphalia might have produced.

It's actually a cargo compartment, like an independent trunk, which mounts on two struts, one of which is hinged.
When empty, the box will swing up vertically and to one side, allowing the engine lid to be raised.
The upper surface of the trunk is like a massive Herrod Helper,or Ernie's wing sans end-plates.I've never seen one in the U.S..

be what?? is that some foreign language?
ok, off the aero topic, still on the beetle: what does it hurt to give the engine all the turbo boost it can produce at the given rpm/throttle, instead of the computer constantly sending so much off the waste gate?

The point would be that aerohead is off to Bonneville, and will dig it up when he gets back.
