Exhaust in the wake... like base bleed on an artillery shell. ;-) Doesn't much affect the trajectory or velocity but does make the shell retain more kinetic energy.
Boattail bullets enjoy a similar effect on retained energy over ones with the same weight, diameter and nose shape.
