I had a car that would buck and misfire and ping at light throttle cruise in overdrive for many years. Never set a CEL in the first 50k / 4 years I had that car. Then one day, I got an EGR code.
Replaced the bad part and the pinging, bucking and misfiring went away.
What I learned was that a malfunctioning EGR system can cause problems and still be 'in spec'
