GM is very careful about rearward vision and the spoiler might have been a compromise,balancing safety and drag reduction/downforce.
nothing can be seen below the rear wing when backing up or looking through the rear view mirror so it has nothing to do with visability, and anytime it snows the rear deck and gap in the spoiler usually gets completely covered and filled in and it really doesnt seem to have any effect on keeping the rear window clean
