You might tuft the area back there,and observe the yarn alternately,with gap open,then taped shut,to see if the flow pattern appears to change with the alteration.
When GM was developing the Trans Am Firebird,the Camaro 'kicker' type spoiler had the best performance,but Pontiac had to stay with the 'styling',so they used something more like what is on your car now.
