Well, what I would suggest is drop in a 6.2 diesel, and add propane injection.
I build racing stuff and hi-perf. street, one of my trucks is a 1st Gen. Cummins Turbo Diesel.
Added a DIY propane injection, went from 20 mpg to 28 mpg. A 30# propane bottle lasts me about 1200 miles.
Total cost of propane system? 120 bucks from Tractor supply, O'Reillys, and the propane gas store....Took me 1 weekend....Been running it 3 years on a 350,000 mile cummins, 91' 350D Cab and Chassis with flatbed.
