For '01, there were three engines, all 1.7L D-series. Wikipedia: D17A1 D17A2 and D17A6

The standard VTEC engine was in the EX only (at least in the US). You want to avoid this one.

The SOHC non-VTEC engine was in the DX and LX (and the more rare "VP" model). This one is good.

And finally, the VTEC-E which is in the HX only. This engine is best.

If you found an ad for an LX with a VTEC engine, I believe it is either misrepresented or has had an engine swap.
