What's different about Richard Buckminster Fuller is that his Anticipatory Design Science put tools on the shelf for problems we would and will face later. An example: his Synergetic Geometry gives us a conceptual framework to work on the nanoscale. Doing ever more with ever less qualifies as General Efficiency.
There are conceptual frameworks in which in February 2013, after a 3-month interregnum between Ages, we begin a 10K year Golden Age.
I've always looked for science fiction that shows a future that I would care to inhabit. So that leaves us with, ummm...... Barbarella?
