Evidently they realized their mistake after it was in production and the next freshening got a substantial increase in rear headroom.
Moon Unit is the wagon version, though, so didn't suffer from that ill-advised styling indiscretion. Just like "New Beetle"; first one needlessly threw out rear seat utility for style; finally VW is fitting a roof that appears to fix that.
