as far as tires its more in the tread when i had my 2nd gen explorer the ride was quite nice when the tires were of the non aggressive style, but the min I put some mud tires on the rear it didn't quite react like a truck yet, but you definitely could feel a difference. BTW the tire size on my EX was 235/75/15
