Yes Sir, that metal case is the E.M. shield for the wiring and it needs to be grounded.(usually through the connector itself)
And grounds are never a bad thing.
I have found in the past when I have a ghost prob. that sometimes just adding a dedicated ground from the Eng to the trans to the frame to the puter to the bat seems to work. Not necessarily in that order.
Not sure exactly why, it just does.
Old trick from a coworker many years ago.
