Measuring engine on vs car on with engine off

I have been thinking that I'd like to have a way of measuring engine hours. Because it odometers not a real good reading when I spend a large fraction of my time engine off coasting.

It would be useful to be able to track hours not miles so I know how much wear is on the engine and its components. It would also make a good number to track how much pulse and glide is on each tank.

I was thinking of measuring car on hours and engine on (rpm>0). I have a very limited idea on how to do this. The car on hour meter is straight forward, hooks to a power source that is only on with the car, say the radio wire that comes on with the car? The engine one is past where I can figure it out. Any help?
