From my experience calibrating an MPGuino and a ScanGauge, I'd say that it's best to drive the longest distance you can for the distance calibration. I have a 55 mile commute which I've used to calibrate them. But when I do the 300 approx miles drive to Watkins Glen each year I calibrate over that distance. Four miles doesn't seem nearly long enough, even if you were to stop and start the car right at the mileage posts.
I use a GPS to get the distance. I ignore the car's odometer for that purpose.
