Welcome, welcome. A friend of mine (the guy I built the EV with) has the same GTI as you, and grumbles about its fuel economy. I think he's able to squeak around 40 mpg Imperial (about 33 mpg US) from it on the highway when he doesn't push it.
Of course the place to start, if you haven't figured it out already, is (1) to get fuel economy instrumentation (unless your car already has it), (2) start tracking your fuel consumption in the garage, and (3) put a wrench on the nut behind the wheel.
