Just a fyi on things I have noticed with my corolla.... Been doing a lot of small trips similar to yours, and my tank average was 33mpg vs "normal" lately being 36-38mpg. Summer is 40-45+.

Just hitting low 30s is boosting my MPG a lot vs 20s, really amazing at the change for my car. Also my DEFO in the automatic cuts off the injectors from pretty much any speed over 30mph, and kicks on the injectors at around 25mph, somewhere around 1200 rpm i would say. If you have the ROOM and traffic permits, coasting in neutral (atleast in my case) is slightly better than DEFO, but DEFO is 100x better if the coast distance is restricted in any way. I target to get to corners at 25mph or less, normally around 20 so I can basically do a rolling stop if safe and no cops .
