I'm not sure, but I'd guess my engine is off about 50% of my commute. It's probably more like 60 on 40 off for highway trips.

It's absolutely a benefit during the warmup segment. The engine will use much more fuel for the time it's running, so if you minimize that and make full use of the time it IS on, in a pulse, your overall will be better. The first couple miles are critical to a good trip - make or break it.
