Hope you can get your transmission woes fixed without too much hassle, though it sounds like a big hassle already.
Just installed a voltmeter to monitor my battery voltage as I do have a rather long commute. Once the temperatures plummeted it got very easy to drain the battery before I arrived at work. Now I don't let it drop below 50% before switching back to engine on gliding.
