45 MPG seems to be easily achievable with the truck. An uncle of mine used to have a 4-door Suzuki Vitara with the same engine retrofitted into, and in spite of the higher weight and lower gearing it consistently got 42 MPG in city and highway.

Yea...my daily driver is the 89 VW Jetta 1.6 NA Diesel that I am putting into this truck for now. I dont think my jetta has an egt guage now..I never had issues on the highway, been driving it for a year now..mostly highway.
My uncle used the VW-powered Vitara mostly on highway, and also didn't have major failures. Only a burnt head gasket until he changed the radiator for a more suitable one...
