Context ought to be the fuel rationing of WWII. Those last two items kept plenty of vehicles from being used to the extent of fuel that could be found.
The pleasure of saving today is that tomorrow brings the unexpected. And driving for FE is a fine confidence-builder in that light.

Good thoughts. I know that I'm a bit abusive about Teresa's rear tire with relatively brisk accelerations and P&G, but it's really an exchange: if I accelerate gently, my FE goes down. And I'm still quite gentle with the tires compared to most other bikers.
The unexpected - we can't be really prepared for that, but this mind set might help in the times to come.
