I've been on here less than a year, so I'm still "young" - but that doesn't mean I'm not trying to save as much as possible. I think it would be neat to put together a list of the people with the highest

Gallons Saved/Gallons Used ratio, obviously the higher the total number the better. Just to see who can break 1, and even get close to (if not over) 2! With the ridiculously efficient and effective hypermilers on here, I'd be surprised if there weren't a couple....
(and yes, I realize that this is basically the % over epa as already listed, I just think finding another way to show this would be fun)

You're basically talking about lifetime % over EPA rather than the 90-day % EPA that's shown in people's signatures.

My lifetime is at 118.5%. I've had 90-day averages over 200% briefly (back when it was warm outside). Granted, I don't have an official EPA rating.

I'm not aware of anyone whose legitamately done >200% EPA consistantly.

In my 383 Formula S 1967 Barracuda, I used 100 gallons a week for 16 weeks before I sold that 10 MPG gas hog, but it sure was fun. 40 years ago.

Total fuel used = 713.53 gallons
Total fuel saved = 696 gallons

With the gas engine, I was just starting to catch up on the saved side; 535 gallons used vs. 460 saved. Since putting in the diesel, I've been saving more than burning, as in; 178 gallons used vs. 235 saved. I'll be "over square" in a couple fills. Each thousand mark will be a bit longer.

Looks like I'm close to having saved 1k gls over the past 43k. Guess I should also update as it would probably push over.

The EPA number is an estimate as this truck type is exempt. But it's based partly on an aftermarket survey where owners reported averaging 15-mpg all around (though most of those trucks were likely 4WD and auto trans).

Another way of seeing this 1000-gls is that it looks as though I "might" average 1k gls per 21k miles.

But the important figure to me is cpm . . and it really ought to be to others. FE is nice (as a game), but what it really shows me is that I am driving as easily as possible to get the longest life from the vehicle (as I do not push hard through corners, flyovers, etc; tire life is another indicator).

Fuel might go up in price, might be harder to get . . but then, so will tires and batteries.

Context ought to be the fuel rationing of WWII. Those last two items kept plenty of vehicles from being used to the extent of fuel that could be found.

The pleasure of saving today is that tomorrow brings the unexpected. And driving for FE is a fine confidence-builder in that light.

.

Good thoughts. I know that I'm a bit abusive about Teresa's rear tire with relatively brisk accelerations and P&G, but it's really an exchange: if I accelerate gently, my FE goes down. And I'm still quite gentle with the tires compared to most other bikers.

The unexpected - we can't be really prepared for that, but this mind set might help in the times to come.
