I once had a car modified with a cold vapor setup. We got the car to run with the carb turned off via a tap in the fuel line. The fuel line was clear and we could literally see the car run on invisible gas.

Car went from a best of around 38mpg at 60mph highway cruising to 54mpg on vapor but the speed could not exceed 50mph and you needed to take a packed lunch and a book to read while it got up to that speed. It was so pathetically gutless we took it off. As for trying to combine both fuel systems - it just ran rich. EFI and a tunable computer would fix that but at the end of the day no magic here - and no big gains without an equally big downside.
