In the rear view it's extended ~1ft, but it should have been narrowed as well. The contour would actually be somewhat like the Volvo C30 with broad fenders and a narrow cabin.
You could totally do that, replacing the rear hatch fenders and bumper. A reasonable goal would be 10% better mileage; e.g., 50 to 55mpg.
