I mitigate that by minimizing the amount of time that the key is on, but the engine is off. My UltraGauge appears to just measure the trip time based on key-on time, not necessarily engine-on time, when it updates the trip time I use in my average speed calculations. I know that the trip computer in my truck does the same.
