As freebeard said, the only requirement is wanting to be in(paraphrasing).
New member, drinks all around, rednecks tab
! (Maybe break out some stump hole
?!)
I also did a "hatch-ectomy" by taking out the trunk lid, rear window and rear seat. The rear seat support was only held in my 4 spot welds, so I figured that it wasn't very structurally important. I also welded pipe to the bumper that has withstood a rear-ending from a Subaru Forester. Low speed but no visible damage to any of the welds, bumper, or framework, so I'm pretty happy( slight bending of the rear most cross piece). I'm all for leaving the original rear bumper in place.
