The hand throttle on the Aerocivic can either be locked to hold a throttle setting to act as a "driving with load" cruise control or it can be used unlocked as an alternative throttle control when my foot gets tired on a long trip. The hand throttle lock is not a safety issue since I can easily override the friction lock by pulling the hand throttle's lever back to retard the throttle or, in an emergency, press in the clutch and let the engine rev up until I can get the lever pulled back. At normal freeway cruising speed power settings, the engine only revs up to 4k or 5k when the clutch is depressed.
