There was a very unusual storm in the Arctic that lasted for a couple weeks, and it has turned much of the ice into slush. All the fresh water from previous years has lowered the salinity of the water and it takes a bit more heat to melt it now. It will start melting quickly soon enough.
The data show that it could be ice free in August of 2016. If it melts completely this year I'd be surprised - and we will be in deep yogurt a few years early.
