last bike i bought had a stumble, felt like it was going too lean when i would try to open it up, but was getting mileage in the mid-low 30s

tore down the carbs looking for a blockage. i thought the main jets looked huge, but they had the OE jet size stamped on them. ordered a new set and it was obvious when comparing old vs new, that one of the previous owners had "rejetted" the bike with a drill bit. the drilled out jet would have flowed roughly 4x as much as the stock jet, which i guess kills velocity through the jet, and results in poor atomization and your engine tring to burn a puddle of gas

after that it ran 40-45mpg
