I just bought a used KLR 650, single cylinder dual sport bike, often referred to as the "Swiss Army Knife" of motorcycles. Those are worth a look as well.
I'm a medium-large guy, 6' and 210lbs and couldn't bring myself to buy a 250cc considering the freeway travel I'll be be doing.

If a spin on a Sabre once in a while feeds the beast inside each and every man and allows him to be more fuel efficient the rest of the time, I say go for it.
(1700$ for such an old bike, you have to need your spin pretty hard ...)

I'm medium small, 5'7" and 155 pound .The BMW has fuel injection and is beautifully put together! A different generation to a KLR, good as they are .
The BMW gets almost exactly the same fuel consumption as the latest Yamaha 250 ....it also has fuel injection but the Yam puts out 23 hp max and the BMW gives 53 hp.
I'll take a secondhand BMW!

$1700 isn't bad, could easily get my $$ back if I sold it. Was the most performance for the buck really, and it leaves %99 of the bikes around here at the light while being a very comfortable touring bike. I do like those dual sport thumpers though, maybe I will go that direction next time.

My brother-in-law has a V65 in the same color with the matching factory full fairing. Really a nice mid-size sport tourer with a ton of power.
I wouldn't bother worrying about the FE with it - just have fun! It doesn't do that great as far as MPG from what I recall - maybe 35-ish? I'll have to ask him about it the next time I see him.

wow, I got 27mpg after the first tank, and I didn't sit around idling (the cams need oil) and even coasted some, wow. Anyone want to guess what the problem is?

If it's anything like the Goldwing there could be dragging brakes and maladjusted carbs; there could also be carb flooding such that a cylinder isn't firing under some or all conditions. There could be other stuff altogether like retarded timing, choke(s) not fully opening, who knows...

last bike i bought had a stumble, felt like it was going too lean when i would try to open it up, but was getting mileage in the mid-low 30s
tore down the carbs looking for a blockage. i thought the main jets looked huge, but they had the OE jet size stamped on them. ordered a new set and it was obvious when comparing old vs new, that one of the previous owners had "rejetted" the bike with a drill bit. the drilled out jet would have flowed roughly 4x as much as the stock jet, which i guess kills velocity through the jet, and results in poor atomization and your engine tring to burn a puddle of gas
after that it ran 40-45mpg

Damn I hate carburetors, I keep swearing off of them. Take this @#$!@#%er apart 20 times to get 4 of them "dialed" in. Seriously considering an economy tbi conversion at this point...

I'm thinking of a manifold and one old VW carb to feed that 'Wing.
