The impressiveness of the mpg rating depends on the average speed, in my opinion, but I expect they could do better with taller gearing. I know the difference between conventional manual and DSG VW's is quite pronounced at highway speed.
(And for the record, I average about 60 mpg at 60 mph on flat ground).
