Once you get rid of that H, I'll bet a piece of plastic or coroplas could be placed on top of that mesh. RTV it. Tape to hold it down while the glue cures.

Yeah I might put some kind of tape on the front and start with some kind of silcone or RTV from the back. Smooth it out as best I can. Put some painters tape to hold till it sets up. Then sand and paint with some black spray. Heck if it turns out too bad I could always buy some replacement insert that they make for about a $100.
