I think an EV trailer would be of little use if it can extend the range only some 60 miles. A Tesla S can do 200 miles by itself. Why build a trailer with less than that capacity?

60 miles one way. I probably want to be able to come home again without charging if possible. Besides, I don't want to put Tesla-level money into it.

If the pack would be that light you don't need a trailer at all and just have it in the car (the other option for EV mild range extension).

What if my EV is a bike and doesn't have the volume or weight capacity on board? P.S. Or what if I know when I set out that I'm only running around town- I can go out with a "local" sized batt pack and save the weight and volume (equals more efficient stop and start driving). When I know I want more capacity I can add it as desired.

By the time you've done over 200 miles you'd really need to stop and rest somewhere. Only the bluntest of car journalists would not take the opportunity to fill the packs.
Sure, there are not that many quick charging points yet. You may have to plan ahead or make do with slow charging 110V (even though you can charge both packs at the same time). It may be slightly cumbersome, but not prohibitive. Not for us hypermilers anyway

Yeah, I make brief gas or potty stops, sometimes even stops just to stretch. But they last about 10 minutes. Ten minutes of charge time for my EV is just about nothing i.e. useless. However if I stop at a casino I could wall-charge for an hour, maybe more. That still does virtually nothing for the energy needed to complete the trip although I would gladly bank the "free" energy.
