Got a Tracer I'd like to hit 50mpg with; best fe was 42 so I'll have to see what it'll take to bypass the power steering on that one.

Thinking back now, I had a 91 Jetta that had power steering, and a 1.8L with 9.6:1 compression...and I couldn't understand why it would not match or beat my older 84 Jetta's mpg, which also had a 1.8L but with 8.5:1 CR. True the older car was lighter...but it didn't have PS either. I cut the PS belt off the 91 and voila! Matched the older car (another 1 mpg, maybe 1.5. Memory is fuzzy now). Steering felt the same as the older car--same size wheels/tires. 185/60R14.
