The lugging is because of not-so-smooth clutch work. It happens to new drivers taking off in 1st or shifting to 2nd because there isn't as much momentum to dampen the lugging effect. It happened to me when I first started driving too, so don't feel bad! It will become natural with time. Consider driving up to a higher RPM in first gear before shifting to 2nd. Maybe like 3000 or 3500 RPM. Once you get more of a "feel" for the clutch and how to smoothly shift you can focus on driving more economically.
