My '96 Legacy went 240,000 miles before it was rear-ended and totalled. Never had to do a thing outside of regular maintenance. Had to replace the clutch at 119,000 miles (when I purchased the car) due to the previous owner abusing it.

I've heard good things about the Forrester except for the outdated 4-speed automatic transmission. Although, a friend of mine had nothing but problems with one, but she is hard on cars and had purchased used.

How about a Honda CRV? People have reported slightly better economy compared to the RAV4.
