Did you see any Tributes at the Mazda dealership? It's the sister car to the Escape, without the brand name you don't want. I think they have hybrid models as well, good for non-towing situations (which I assume will be a majority of the time).

I'm not trying to push this particular vehicle (much ), just making sure you look at all the options.

Narrowed down to 4 Vehicles

1) Toyota Tacoma
2) Toyota Rav4
3) Subaru Forrester
4) Subaru VX CrossTek

Anyone else notice they are all Toybarus? I certainly keep lobbying for the TDI, but it aint going to happen. Forrester is most likely. The Subaru dealers lifetime warranty requires schedule 1 maintenance from them + 30k transmission services, I'd like to see what their service rates are, otherwise the 2 have the same warranty.

I like the Subaru's because they aren't trying to be SUV's where as the rest are trying pretty hard.

Comments? Particularly regarding Subaru reliability.

Subarus historically are very reliable vehicles. 300k miles on a Subaru is not just unsurprising, it's almost expected.

I can't speak with personal experience for the new models, but we've got a 92 (auto) and a 96 (manual) each with over 200k miles on them and still going strong.

The last model year for the Tribute was 2011.

I personally would do the Crosstek over the Forester (and either over the Toyotas). Has your mom driven any of them? I think the best way to decide would be letting her decide from the 4 you've narrowed it down to. One thing to consider is how easy it is to get into and out of each car. It may not be any issue now, but something to consider for 5 or 10 years down the road.

My mom is at Lake Tahoe with her mother and sister until next week. Main point right now is to narrow down to give her a handful to drive when she gets back.

My cousin has a Tribute with a blown trans (in Reno/ Tahoe) and isn't interested in having it repaired due to endless issues. It is a 2006 with 90k. So I'm pretty sure that between the age and that it is off the list.

I like the Crosstek best of the remaining list, but my dad likes the forester.

Entry is a minor issue for her, but is VERRY important for her mother that spends the winter at her home near us, is legally blind and relies heavily on my mother for transportation.

I took her to drive them all

1) Tacoma: Out unacceptable ride, crap back seat, poor entry.
2) Subaru Crosstek: probably out because the forester is cheaper (yes, really, sale price, not msrp), comes with a hitch, and is larger. I still like it better, but if I was making decisions, it would be a TDI.
3) Subaru Forrester: on fence. Not a fan of high roof, not easiest to get in and out of, but . . . .
4) Toyota Rav 4: chances are the winner, easiest entry, trusted brand, by far quietest and smoothest ride, tied with Forrester for space, lower roof than Forrester, much nicer interior. A bit more money though.

Now we are just waiting for a check from a company that tells you that your emails contain no attachments by replying to that message and including those attachments in the reply (repeatedly I might add).
By far the worst part about Ford IMHO is the painful customer service.

My '96 Legacy went 240,000 miles before it was rear-ended and totalled. Never had to do a thing outside of regular maintenance. Had to replace the clutch at 119,000 miles (when I purchased the car) due to the previous owner abusing it.

I've heard good things about the Forrester except for the outdated 4-speed automatic transmission. Although, a friend of mine had nothing but problems with one, but she is hard on cars and had purchased used.

How about a Honda CRV? People have reported slightly better economy compared to the RAV4.

The current Forrester (and I believe the last one as well) has a CVT.

I have no Idea why I haven't looked at a CRV, guess I'll have to.

Ford got an offer out on Thursday that is acceptable, but in no way accounts for the hundreds (yes seriously) of hours of dealing with the darn thing. Just waiting on a check at this point.
