I've heard good things about the Forrester except for the outdated 4-speed automatic transmission. Although, a friend of mine had nothing but problems with one, but she is hard on cars and had purchased used.
How about a Honda CRV? People have reported slightly better economy compared to the RAV4.

The current Forrester (and I believe the last one as well) has a CVT.
I have no Idea why I haven't looked at a CRV, guess I'll have to.
Ford got an offer out on Thursday that is acceptable, but in no way accounts for the hundreds (yes seriously) of hours of dealing with the darn thing. Just waiting on a check at this point.
