I had a customer with a similar issue in his Z Car. It only crapped out when he was 500 miles from my shop. We replaced the ECU, distributor, fuel pump and relay, pressure regulator and temp sender with good used parts. After 3 months we removed one part and let him drive another 3 months. When it finally crapped out a year later we had it diagnosed as a bad ECU (super rare for one to go bad). Car would flood out and die, then after 15 minutes it restarted and ran fine.
Pop's Cadillac Eldorado, had a lock up solenoid on the torque converter crap out on him. Of course it was when He and Mom drove to central Florida to get on a cruise ship for a week. They drove it home all 800 miles with the converter locking and unlocking every few seconds. Mom did most of the driving to keep the old man from going crazy. The tranny overhaul cost him $1700. He is 92 and she just turned 88 (it happened this year). You can bet next time they will just rent a car if they ever drive that far again.
